Handbag Manufacturing: How Your Design Becomes a Bulk Order
Most brand founders see a handbag at two moments: the sketch and the finished sample. Everything in between decides the price, the quality and how long it takes. Knowing what happens at each stage helps you brief a handbag manufacturer clearly and avoid expensive changes later.
This is how it works at our unit in East of Kailash, where we make handbags and other bags for brands.
Stage 1: The brief
You don't need a technical drawing. A reference photo, a rough sketch or a bag you already own is enough to start. What helps most:
- Approximate size, or what the bag must fit (phone, A4 file, laptop)
- Material and colour
- Number of compartments and pockets
- Handles, strap or both
- Where the logo goes
Send us a reference picture and we'll tell you what's possible.
Stage 2: Pattern making
The pattern maker turns your idea into flat paper or card pieces: body, gussets, flap, handles, pockets and lining. A good pattern is why a bag holds its shape and why the bulk order matches the sample. Small changes here, such as a slightly wider base, make a big difference to how the bag sits.
Stage 3: Material and hardware selection
- Genuine leather for premium, long-life bags
- Vegan PU for fashion ranges and sharper price points
- Plant-based bio-leather for sustainable labels
Hardware matters as much as material. Buckles, D-rings, chains, zips and magnetic snaps are what customers touch every day. Cheap hardware is the most common reason a good-looking bag gets returned. Ask to see hardware options, or request material swatches.
Stage 4: The sample
The first sample is cut, stitched and finished by hand from the pattern. Use it, don't just look at it. Carry it for a day, fill it, open and close it many times. Then ask for corrections. One round of changes is normal; more than two usually means the brief wasn't clear.
Stage 5: Bulk production
Once you approve the sample, bulk production follows the same steps at scale: cutting, skiving (thinning edges), stitching, edge finishing, fitting hardware, attaching lining and branding.
Stage 6: Quality check and dispatch
Every bag is checked against the sample you approved: size, stitching, colour, hardware and logo position. Then it's cleaned, packed and dispatched.
How to keep costs under control
- Fewer panels and pockets mean less cutting and stitching
- Standard hardware costs less than custom-cast pieces
- Using the same material across designs helps you reach better volumes
- Approving the sample quickly avoids rescheduling
